If you’ve been visiting our website for a while, you’ve probably come across a more up-to-date Ballon d'Or quiz. Today we’re starting a journey into the past of this controversial award for the best player of the year—specifically to 2009. From a football perspective it was an interesting year: Barcelona won the Champions League, which only helped Lionel Messi on his way to the first of his eight Ballon d'Or wins. Can you remember the remaining players on the shortlist?

Once you start the quiz, your task will be to name as many as possible of the 30 players who were nominated for the Ballon d'Or in 2009. The players are ordered by their final ranking, starting from the best. In the left column you’ll find the position and nationality. If you get stuck, you can use a hint that reveals the club (or clubs) the player represented that year.
